” WE ARE A TRIPOD MADE UP OF A KEEN SURFER, A FREELANCE ARTIST AND A SPOILT FUR BABY. WE HAVE CHOSEN TO LIVE THIS LIFESTYLE AS WE HAVE ADVENTURE IN OUR SOULS AND WANT TO SEE EVERYTHING THAT THIS BEAUTIFUL WORLD HAS TO OFFER “ – Matt, Elly & Dexter
How long have you guys been travelling Australia in your campervan for?
We sold up everything at the end of October last year and have been on the road since. We are still very much rookies at vanlife and are learning new things every day.
Is there a planned route or are you just taking things as they come?!
We really are just taking each day as it comes. We spent a few months driving up to the top of Queensland and then made our way down the coast to Tasmania where we are exploring at the moment. From here we plan to make our way to Western Australia but haven’t confirmed when this will be or what route we will take.
Tell us a bit about the concept behind Brainwashed Generation?
The concept of Brainwashed Generation is to remind people to live freely and to always do what makes your soul feel good. Many people have become so accustomed to living in a world where they believe in only what they are told, even when the truth is staring them in the face. We ask people to discover life for themselves rather than relying on the opinions of others as it pays to step back and take in what’s around you.
Our artworks aim to provide a sense of freedom and exploration even in a world of chaos. Together we brainstorm ideas and inspire one another to dream big and this results in having numerous projects on the go at any given time. Matt does all of the behind the scenes work that is required to prep the art works, Elly comes along and does the arty bits and Dexter, well let’s just say he is our supervisor.
Your artwork boasts pure talent and is just amazing! Do you do custom orders and sell on the road?
Wow, thank you! Yes absolutely! One of the positives of being on the road is that you have more time to be creative.
What are your 3 ‘GO TO’ items?
Our backgammon board and camera are the two mutual items that are always with us. Then Matts surfboard and Ellys art case are the third must haves for each of us. For Dexter it would be his ball, food and … more balls. Haha.
If you had to swap passengers for the day, who would you choose and why?
Someone who can sing in tune haha. We are both a bit tone deaf – poor Dexter haha.
Is having Dexter on board challenging? Do you find that having a dog restricts the places you can go?
In all honesty it’s really not that difficult! For sure there are some places that you can’t take dogs but he’s part of the crew, so we just work around it. He’s more human than a lot of people out there and he’s an amazing reminder to always be happy and full of life.
We all have THAT ONE story about our travels that makes good campfire chat. What is yours?
Jeez this is a tough one haha we have had some funny and stupid times. We can be quite forgetful… This one time we left our overnight camp and drove down this long winding road to a beach. On the way back, matt spotted a shoe in the middle of the road. A few minutes later there was another shoe, but this time we realised it was his shoe! We turned the van around and sure enough the first one we’d driven over was his matching shoe. We had left both of our shoes on top of the van to dry that morning and obviously forgotten about them. We spent the next half an hour driving up and down the road looking for both of my shoes- it was a great celebration once they were found haha. That’s just one of the many stupid things we’ve done but it’s moments like this that make this journey such an adventure.
