Like always, give us the lowdown! Who you are and why you have chosen to live this idolised lifestyle.
We are two beach loving souls that like to live slow and enjoy the sunshine, Meg and Tyler. We live our very slow and steady life as we didn’t want to get stuck working for ‘things’ that society told us has we had to have. We gave up our uni degrees to chase our dreams of our clothing label and chasing that endless summer. We are a creating a life for ourselves that is sustainable and full of endless opportunities. Honestly, we don’t feel like we chose this, it all just kind of happened to plan out that way, and we haven’t looked back.
Have you guys planned a route that you are going to take around Aus or are you just taking things as they come?!
We are always taking things as they come!! We make plans and they always seem to change (which is the way to go). For the moment we are loving life on the Sunshine coast and hope to do the West Coast in a couple of years with a couple of overseas stints thrown in there as well. Who knows, we are pretty happy to cruise and see what happens!
Other than the obvious reason of “there is so much room for activites”, why did you choose a bus (Luna Blue) over any other option?
Soooo much room for activities – the extra space is so worth it (especially on rainy days). The biggest one for us is that we live full time in Luna, she’s our home, and we don’t have things in storage anywhere waiting for us in a house. This is it; we so needed room for our whole life – which we have so much of (we don’t even really use it all)! Also that with our business we needed to have room for all our stock, so having Luna gives us all the room and flexibility in the world. There was never really any toss up between van or caravan, it was always bus! Have you seen the movie ‘Drift’? If you have, you’ll know what I mean, if you haven’t – I do recommend! When Meg was little, her family was constantly moving around and was based in a camping trailer for 6 years – the setting up/packing down was killer – it was something we just didn’t want!
What are some hot tips you would pass on to someone who is considering fitting out a camper?
1 – Insulate!! One of the most annoying and longest steps, but worth it all the way!! As well as helping with maintaining temperature – it also blocks and keeps in sound (a big help if you decide to stay in caravan parks).
2 – Add your own personal style, that’s the whole point of doing a conversion yourself – as cool as caravans are, think of how plain and boring they are. Get creative and make it yours!! That’s the best part!
3 – Enjoy the process… face it. Something is going to go wrong, maybe even every day! And I promise you will ask yourself, ‘is this right or should I really be doing this’. But it’s like building a house, it takes time and money and you just have to have patience and enjoy it. It might feel like its taking forever but its worth it (you might even miss the process)
4 – Also… get ready for all the crazy stuff you are about to learn!! (we have learnt so much – which we plan to share!)
Not only is Luna Blue your home but she is also a Movable Boutique!! Tell us a bit about your label Modern Day Gypsy and what inspired you to create a label.
It’s crazy how things always seem to work out! Tyler and I were 3 years into our 4-year degree – we had met in Cairns and moved to Geelong, so we were in the middle of winter, miserable, wondering what we were doing without the sun…. We were always vintage shopping and it had always been a dream later in life to begin a brand. We’d always loved prints and patterns and Tyler literally had about 50 vintage tees at one point (this changed when we got Luna). We asked ourselves why were actually waiting to just do it! Then we were inspired to take the final leap after meeting a friend in Bali who had his own label. It then took us about a year to get started after research and planning, making sure everything was ethical and sustainable. Then we launched and it was one of the greatest days! Our brand is free, open minded and bold. We love connecting with like-minded people and working with creative souls – creating beautiful things is one of the best things in life, and its even better when you get to share the creations and make others feel beautiful.
How does it make you feel when you street spot people wearing your label?! Do you get all fuzzy inside
Don’t even get us started!! It’s crazy! We have even been at festivals and you see people with our shirts on and people come up to us and ask about the shirt and say they already follow us on Insta-gram, which is pretty cool. I love seeing people in our creations, its amazing. Sometimes you have to pinch yourself and wonder if that’s really yours!!
Sunrise or Sunset?
They are the two most important times of the day. Honestly we couldn’t pick!! We love both, we are early people and this is the way to be. To rise and set with the sun is the key to balance. Its so amazing how it can take your breath away every single day with no effort at all.
Living out of a campervan fulltime and having no eat-sleep-work-repeat routine is very daunting for some. In two sentences how could you change their minds on it forever?
I can’t… but I do know that if you never try it, you’ll never know the beauty of our land. Its in our bones to be free, its in our bodies to crave the water, give up your ‘work’ to chase the sunshine and love one another with no plans and an open road. Don’t sit there and say “wow, you’re living the dream, I’m so jealous” or “we would love to do that, but we just can’t”. Make it happen, there is always a way.
